Q: Is there a trike for disabled children?

July 27th, 2009 No comments

Q: Hello- I am looking for a trike for my 8 yr old Daughter. She has some disabilities, and riding a two wheel bike is difficult, almost impossible, even with training wheels. She is only 4′ 1″ (so far). Is there a trike that would work for her?

A: In order to answer that question, we’d need to know what her disabilities are.  There are many tricycles that might work, depending on her condition.  There are companies that specialize in adaptive tricycles.   One such company is Rifton, you may want to check their website for more info.  Rifton website.

Another company making tricycles for children with disabilities is TheraTrike.  TheraTrike tricycles are different in that instead of pedaling like a normal cycle, TheraTrike tricycles are moved when the children use a back and forth type walking motion.  This should help with coordination and balance when walking.
